Mouth Ulcer- Causes, Treatment & Home Remedies

What are mouth ulcers?

Mouth ulcers also known as Apthous ulcer are small, painful lesions that develop in your mouth ,lip or at the bottom of your gums. They will make  your eating, drinking, and talking uncomfortable. They appear red , yellow or white in colour. 

Women, adolescents, and other people with a case history of mouth ulcers are at higher risk for developing mouth ulcers. If they appear spontaneously in your mouth this points towards any other underlying disease like HIV , vitamin deficiency .



Does mouth ulcers spread from one person to another?

Mouth ulcers aren’t contagious and typically get away within one to 4 weeks. However, if you get a ulcer that's large or extremely painful, or if it lasts for an extended time without healing, you ought to seek a Dentist.

What causes mouth ulcers?

There is no definite cause behind mouth ulcers. However, certain factors and triggers are identified. These include:

Treatment of Mouth Ulcers

-An antimicrobial mouth rinse, like Listerine or mouth rinses with chlorhexidine (Peridex, Periogard)

-An Antibiotic , Doxycycline 100mg once a day.

-Mouth ulcers can be painful so medicine like Advil (ibuprofen) , Mucopain gel will provide pain relief.

-A corticosteroid ointment, like hydrocortisone hemisuccinate or beclomethasone. Steroid helps to reduce pain and swelling.

-Mouthwash prescribed by your Dentist that contains dexamethasone or lidocaine for inflammation and pain.

Application Of Ointment

Home remedies to treat ulcer 

-Do warm saline gargles twice a day

-Covering mouth ulcers with bakeing soda paste will balance the PH and reduce inflammation of that area.

-Using topical anesthetic like Orajel or Orasore. Take a small amount pea sized drop of orajel in your clean finger or a cotton swab, directly apply to the affected area , dab the ointment slowly untill you form a thin coating.  Do not swallow , apply 3-4 times a day.

-Applying ice to ulcer if u have burning sensation.

-Use Sensodyne- Iso Active or ProNamel toothpaste which does not contain sodium lauryl sulphate ,responsible for ulcers in many cases.

-Avoid eating spicy foods for some day.

-Place damp tea bag on your ulcer.

- Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent , can also b applied mixing coconut oil in it.

-Taking nutritional supplements like vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, zinc.

-Application of honey in affected area will also provide relief.
